Court postpones Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala pre-trial hearing

The Johannesburg High Court did not proceed with the pre-trial hearing of businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala on Thursday. The matter was postponed to allow outstanding legal issues to be addressed.

Matlala appeared in court with several co-accused, including his wife, Tsakani Matlala. They face charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering. The case relates to an alleged plot to kill a former associate.

Prosecutors told the court that some procedural matters still unresolved. As a result, the State requested a postponement. The judge granted the request.

No witnesses testified during the brief appearance. In addition, no evidence presented. The accused did not enter any pleas. The court only dealt with scheduling and administrative matters.
The court postponed the case to 6 February 2026.

Meanwhile, Matlala remains in custody. The court did not change his detention status. His legal team did not apply for bail during this appearance.

However, the issue of where he should be held will be discussed at the next hearing. The State wants the matter to remain in Gauteng. Prosecutors argue that this will make the trial process easier to manage.

The defence maintains that the accused are innocent. Lawyers said they still need more time to study the case documents. They also plan to bring further applications before the trial starts.

The case has attracted public interest because of Matlala’s profile. He is known as a controversial businessman with links to political and security circles.

Police arrested him last year after a long investigation. Since then, the case has moved through several courts. Eventually, the matters merged into one High Court case in Johannesburg.

Outside the court building, police maintained a strong presence and Security. Only a limited number of people allowed inside the courtroom.

The next court date will focus on pre-trial issues. These include jurisdiction and trial readiness.

For now, the court has not made any ruling on the merits of the case. The legal process is still at an early stage. Further developments are expected when the accused return to court next week.

The case will continue as investigations and legal preparations move forward.
