Two Killed in Shooting Outside Booysens Magistrates’ Court

Two people died after a shooting outside the Booysens Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

Three others sustained gunshot wounds during the attack.
The incident happened shortly after 10:30am near the main entrance of the court. Several people had just exited the building when gunmen approache.


Police said the suspects walked up to a group standing outside the court. They opened fire without warning. Panic followed as people ran for safety.


Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes. Paramedics assessed the victims. Two people showed no signs of life and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities cordoned off the area while forensic teams began their work. Officers collected spent cartridges and photographed the scene.


Police confirmed that the victims had attended a court appearance earlier that morning. They were supporting a man who was facing charges of murder and attempted murder.


Witnesses described the suspects as three men wearing caps. After the shooting, the men ran to a white Audi vehicle parked nearby.
The suspects fled the area at high speed.
Police have not made any arrests.


Gauteng police management deployed additional officers to the area. Detectives began tracing CCTV footage from nearby buildings.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Police said the investigation is at an early stage.


Officers urged anyone with information to contact the South African Police Service.


The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development condemned the attack. The department described the shooting as shocking and unacceptable.


Officials said courts must remain safe spaces for the public, legal practitioners, and staff. Senior officials were expected to visit the court to assess security.


The shooting has renewed concerns about safety at court buildings. Calls for stronger security measures have grown louder.
Police said investigations will continue until the suspects are arrested.
