The City of Johannesburg disconnected electricity at the ANC’s national headquarters, Luthuli House, after the party failed to settle an outstanding electricity bill of R365 000.
Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero authorised the power cut as part of the city’s renewed credit control programme. City Power carried out the instruction after the ANC missed several payment deadlines.
Technicians arrived at the Johannesburg CBD building on Sunday and switched off the electricity supply. Offices at Luthuli House immediately lost power. Staff continued working using generators and backup systems.
The city said it followed standard procedures applied to all defaulting customers. Officials insisted that no organisation receives special treatment.
Morero said the city must enforce payment rules to protect service delivery. He said unpaid municipal bills weaken the city’s finances and disrupt operations. He added that political influence cannot override municipal law.
The building serves as the administrative centre of the governing party. Many residents viewed the move as a sign of equal enforcement.
Opposition parties welcomed the action and called for stronger accountability. They said the incident exposed serious financial challenges within the ruling party.
The City of Johannesburg faces mounting debt from households, businesses, and institutions. Officials said unpaid electricity accounts cost the city millions of rand each month. The municipality has increased enforcement efforts to recover lost revenue.
City Power restored electricity after confirming payment. The party did not issue a detailed public statement on the matter.
The city said the Luthuli House disconnection sends a clear message. Municipal services depend on consistent payment. Authorities said enforcement will continue across Johannesburg without exception.
