SANDF to Mark Armed Forces Day in Thohoyandou

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will mark Armed Forces Day (AFD) on 21 February in Thohoyandou, Limpopo. The town served as the capital of the former Venda homeland.

The national commemoration will bring together government leaders, senior military officials, veterans, and members of the public. The event forms part of the SANDF’s annual calendar and rotates across provinces.

Armed Forces Day honours SANDF members who died while serving South Africa. The date commemorates the sinking of the SS Mendi in 1917. More than 600 South African soldiers lost their lives during the tragedy in the English Channel.

Each year, the SANDF uses the occasion to remember fallen soldiers and highlight the role of the military. The force continues to protect the country’s sovereignty and support peace missions in Africa.
The SANDF selected Thohoyandou to recognise Limpopo’s contribution to the defence force. Many soldiers originate from the province. Several communities in Vhembe have a strong military tradition.

Local leaders welcomed the decision. They described it as a moment of pride for the region. Residents believe the event will place Thohoyandou on the national stage.
Senior SANDF commanders will attend the event. Military veterans’ organisations will also take part in the proceedings.

The event is expected to boost the local economy. Accommodation facilities, transport operators, and food vendors will benefit from increased activity. The SANDF says the event will strengthen relations between the military and civilians.

Preparations Underway
Provincial and local authorities are working with the SANDF on logistics and security. Officials are assessing venues and road access in Thohoyandou. Authorities aim to ensure a smooth and safe event.

As preparations continue, the SANDF says the focus remains on remembrance and unity. Armed Forces Day will honour those who served the country with courage and sacrifice.
