
The three people accused of murdering an e-hailing driver have abandoned their bail application at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. The decision was made during a brief court appearance on Monday.
The case has now moved to the next legal stage.The accused were facing charges of murder and robbery. It was alleged that the victim was attacked while on duty. The driver had responded to a request for a trip before the incident occurred.
His body was later found in a remote area outside Pretoria. During the court session, the defence informed the magistrate that the bail bid would no longer be pursued. As a result, the three suspects will remain in custody. They will stay behind bars until their next appearance.
No reasons were given in open court for the withdrawal of the application.Meanwhile, the state opposed bail from the start. Prosecutors argued that the accused posed a flight risk. It was also said that they could interfere with witnesses.
The seriousness of the charges was highlighted by the prosecution. The court was told that the crime had shocked the community.
Furthermore, the investigating officer had earlier testified that strong evidence linked the suspects to the crime. In addition, CCTV footage reportedly obtained from nearby businesses. The court also told that items belonging to the victim were recovered.
However, the defence maintained that the accused were innocent. They argued that the suspects had fixed addresses. It also said that they had no previous convictions. Despite these claims, the bail process ended by the defence itself.
The family of the deceased attended the court proceedings. Emotions ran high inside the courtrooms. Community members also filled the public gallery. They demanded justice for the slain driver.According to police, the victim had gone missing after accepting a trip request. His vehicle was later found abandoned.
Days later, his body was discovered. A post-mortem confirmed that he had died from multiple injuries. An investigation then launched.Subsequently, the three suspects were arrested at different locations. They charged shortly after their arrest. The case has since attracted public attention.
Driver associations have urged companies to improve safety systems.Meanwhile, the court has postponed the matter for further investigations. The accused are expected to return to court next month.
On that date, the state is expected to present more evidence. The case will then move closer to trial.For now, the suspects remain in custody.
