Ramaphosa assesses flood damage in Tshakhuma, Makhado Sub-Region

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday visited Tshakhuma in the Makhado Sub-Region to assess damage caused by recent floods. The visit followed days of heavy rainfall that disrupted lives and damaged infrastructure across parts of Vhembe District.


President Ramaposa arrived at Tshakhuma mall before travelling to Tshakhuma Luvhalani B, Ward 29. Floodwater submerged several roads in the area. Some routes remained inaccessible at the time of the visit. Residents struggled to move freely and access basic services.


Communities speak out
Ramaphosa met residents affected by the floods. Community members shared their experiences and raised concerns about their living conditions. Many reported damage to homes, household goods, and food supplies.
Informal traders described losses caused by water damage. Some said they could not reopen their businesses. Others expressed concern about income disruptions and rising repair costs.
The President listened to the concerns and assured residents of government support. He emphasised the importance of rapid relief and recovery efforts.


Infrastructure and service damage
Floods damaged roads, drainage systems, and small bridges in the area. Officials reported that some households lost access to electricity and clean water.

Emergency teams continued to monitor high-risk zones.
Local authorities highlighted the need for urgent road repairs. They also stressed with the importance of restoring access for emergency vehicles and school transport.


Government response! Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba accompanied the President during the visit. She briefed him on provincial disaster response measures already in place.


Disaster management teams deployed relief supplies to affected families. Social development officials assessed needs for food parcels and temporary shelter. Engineers began evaluating infrastructure damage.


ANC Provincial Secretary Vhamusanda Reuben Madadzhe and ANC Vhembe Regional Secretary Comrade Matodzi Ralushai also joined the delegation. The leadership pledged political support for recovery programmes.


Way forward
Ramaphosa stressed the need for coordination between national, provincial, and local government. He called for faster implementation of relief interventions.


Government teams will complete full damage assessments in the coming days. These reports will guide long-term rebuilding plans. Authorities will prioritise road repairs, housing support, and flood prevention measures.


Relief operations in Tshakhuma continue as officials work to stabilise affected communities and restore normal life.
