Tswinga Road to Bridge Officially Closed After Flooding

Tswinga road to the bridge is officially closed. After heavy rains caused severe flooding and damaged the roadway. Authorities closed the route to protect motorists and pedestrians from further danger.

Officials erected barricades and placed “Road Closed” signs at the site to prevent vehicles from attempting to cross the flooded section. Water, mud and debris covered large parts of the road, making the bridge unsafe for public use.

Flood Incident Leaves Man MissingThe closure follows a tragic incident that occurred on 17 January 2026, when a Somali national attempted to cross the bridge during high water levels.

The river was already swollen due to continuous rainfall. As the man tried to drive across, strong water currents overwhelmed his vehicle. The water swept the car off the bridge and dragged it into the river.

Witnesses said the vehicle drifted downstream before disappearing from sight. Rescue teams began search efforts soon after the incident. The man has not yet been found.

Community Warned About Rising Water LevelsResidents said the bridge becomes extremely dangerous during heavy rain, as water levels rise quickly and without warning. Community members raised concerns about the lack of early closures and warning signs before the incident.

Following assessments, authorities decided to close the road completely. Officials cited structural risks, erosion near the bridge and the unpredictable flow of water as major safety threats.

Officials urged motorists to use alternative routes and warned against ignoring roadblocks.

“Floodwater is dangerous and unpredictable,” an official said. “No one should attempt to cross flooded roads under any circumstances.”

Residents have also called for long-term safety measures, including stronger barriers, improved drainage and earlier road closures during extreme weather conditions.
