Malema’s attack on Trump outside court sparks backlash and global debate

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has ignited controversy after launching a fierce verbal attack on former United States President Donald Trump outside the East London Magistrate’s Court this week.

Malema addressing supporters after his firearms case was postponed. During his speech, he accused Trump of being a “devil” and a leader who is “destabilising the world” through his policies and political influence.

He dismissed claims of “white genocide” in South Africa, saying the narrative was false and designed to divide the country. Malema argued that such claims were being promoted by foreign leaders to undermine South Africa’s democracy and fuel racial tension.

The speech drew widespread attention after Malema used extreme language directed at Trump. He said the former US president should “drink poison and die.” The remark shocked many supporters and critics alike.

Political analysts said the statement went beyond normal political criticism and risked encouraging dangerous rhetoric. Some commentators defended Malema, arguing that his words were symbolic and part of his long-standing confrontational political style. Others said the comments crossed an ethical line and could damage South Africa’s international relations.

He said Africa must resist foreign interference and defend its sovereignty. He accused Western governments of exploiting African resources while pretending to care about human rights.

He linked Trump’s comments about South Africa to what he described as racist political agendas. Malema insisted that the country does not face racial persecution and accused foreign leaders of using South Africa for political gain.

The speech comes at a sensitive moment for the EFF leader. He is awaiting sentencing in a firearms-related case.

International attention remains focused on South Africa following Trump’s past remarks about crime and race in the country. Malema’s attack has now added to diplomatic and political tensions.

The United States has not yet formally responded to Malema’s comments. However, reactions on social media were swift, with users both condemning and praising his stance.
Supporters described Malema as fearless and unapologetic. Critics said his language was reckless and harmful.

The incident has reopened debate about the limits of political speech and the responsibilities of public leaders. He also raised questions about how far political rhetoric should go in a highly polarised global environment.

Whether viewed as defiance or provocation, Malema’s remarks have once again placed him at the centre of national and international controversy.
