Police have arrested a man accused of killing his former girlfriend in a violent stabbing incident. The case has drawn strong reactions from the community and renewed concern about domestic violence.
Lazarus Antonio allegedly stabbed and killed Kgaugelo Marota during a confrontation. The incident happened earlier this week. Police responded after receiving reports of a serious assault.
Paramedics arrived at the scene but could not save Marota. She died from multiple stab wounds. Officers secured the area and launched an investigation.
After the fatal incident, Antonio allegedly returned to his home. Police say he then attacked his current girlfriend with a knife. The woman sustained serious injuries but survived the assault.
Emergency services transported her to a hospital for urgent treatment. Medical staff later confirmed that her condition had stabilised. Doctors continue to monitor her recovery.
Police arrested Antonio shortly after the second attack. Officers took him into custody without incident.
Antonio appeared before a magistrate for the first time this week. The State charged him with murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors opposed bail during the brief appearance.
The court postponed the case to 11 February 2026. The postponement will allow police to complete investigations and gather further evidence. Antonio remains in custody.
Family members of the deceased expressed deep shock and grief. Community members also voiced anger and sadness over the incident. Some residents described the attack as senseless and tragic.
Police continue to interview witnesses and collect forensic evidence. Investigators are working to establish the full sequence of events. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
The incident adds to growing concern about gender-based violence in South Africa. Police statistics show that many violent crimes involve people in intimate relationships.
Law enforcement officials have urged victims to report threats and abuse early.
Support organisations continue to call for stronger prevention measures and better protection for victims.
The surviving victim is expected to assist police once she has fully recovered.
Her statement will form a key part of the prosecution’s case.
The matter will return to court in February 2026 as the legal process continues.
