Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba visited the flood-affected Tshakhuma area to assess damage caused by recent heavy rains. The visit formed part of the provincial government’s response to widespread flooding across the Vhembe District.
Several parts of Tshakhuma experienced severe flooding after continuous rainfall. Rising water levels damaged houses, washed away household goods, and left many families displaced. Some roads became inaccessible, making it difficult for residents to reach clinics, schools, and shops.
Community Engagement on the Ground
During the visit, Ramathuba met with affected residents and local leaders. She listened to concerns raised by families who lost property and struggled to find safe shelter. Residents described how floodwaters entered their homes within hours, forcing them to evacuate during the night.
Community members also raised concerns about sanitation and health risks. Standing water remains visible in some areas. Residents fear the spread of waterborne diseases, especially among children and elderly people.
Health Services on High Alert
Ramathuba said the Department of Health has increased monitoring in flood-hit communities. Health teams remain on standby to respond to disease outbreaks. Clinics in nearby areas continue to operate, while mobile health services support residents who cannot travel.
She urged residents to seek medical help if they experience symptoms linked to contaminated water. The MEC also warned against using untreated water for drinking or cooking.
Government Relief Measures
According to Ramathuba, disaster management teams are working with municipalities and social development officials. Authorities have started providing food parcels, clean water, and temporary shelter to displaced families. Priority assistance targets vulnerable households, including those with young children and chronic patients.
Local leaders welcomed the visit and said it brought reassurance to the community. They called for faster repairs to damaged roads and drainage systems. Business owners also reported losses after floodwaters destroyed stock and interrupted trade.
Call for Caution as Rains Continue
Ramathuba warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days. She urged residents to avoid flooded rivers and roads. She also encouraged communities to report emergencies to local authorities immediately.
The provincial government said it will continue monitoring conditions in Tshakhuma and surrounding areas. Long-term plans to improve storm-water management and reduce future flood risks are under consideration.
