One dead, more than 100 pupils injured in R510 crash near Thabazimbi

One person died and more than 100 schoolchildren injured in a serious road crash on the R510 near Thabazimbi on Thursday morning.


The accident happened shortly after 06:00 between Thabazimbi and Northam, close to the Amanda Mine turn-off in Limpopo.
A scholar transport bus collided head-on with a bakkie while travelling along the busy road. The bus was carrying pupils to school when the crash occurred.


Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes. Paramedics found the driver of the bakkie trapped inside the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and declared dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the deceased was a 58-year-old man.


The bus driver survived the crash. He suffered injuries and taken to hospital for medical treatment.
A total of 109 learners sustained injuries in the collision.

Most of the injuries reported as minor, including bruises and shock. However, several pupils required urgent medical attention.
Ambulances transported 103 learners to Thabazimbi Provincial Hospital. Six others taken to Amandelbult Mine Hospital. Medical staff placed on high alert to manage the large number of patients.


Traffic on the R510 heavily affected for several hours. Police closed parts of the road to allow emergency crews to work safely. Motorists experienced long delays while authorities cleared the scene.


Preliminary information suggests that the bakkie may have been overtaking when the collision happened. Officials have not confirmed the exact cause of the crash. A full investigation is under way.


The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety visited the scene. Officials expressed concern about reckless driving and road safety, especially during peak morning hours.


Parents rushed to hospitals after receiving news of the crash. Many were visibly distressed as they waited for updates on their children’s condition.


Provincial authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution on the R510. The road is known for heavy traffic, including mining vehicles and scholar transport.


Police have opened a case of culpable homicide. Investigations will determine whether charges will be laid.
Officials said further updates will be released once the investigation is complete.
