Top MLS Coach Backs Mbokazi’s Chicago Fire Move After Broos Criticism

Broos recently questioned whether a switch to Major League Soccer. Would benefit the young defender’s development, raising concerns about the level of competition compared to Europe?

However, Carnell believes the move could work in Mbokazi’s favour, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.

Carnell said the global focus on the United States ahead of the World Cup could boost Mbokazi’s profile. Playing in America at this stage of his career might offer opportunities that overlooked.

“In the next six months, all focus shifts to America because of the World Cup. And that’s actually a blessing in disguise for him, especially that he will be playing here with Bafana,” Carnell said.

He added that representing Chicago Fire places Mbokazi on a visible international platform. Which could attract attention from scouts and clubs across the world.

“Playing for Chicago raises his profile and will also make him more visible at such a platform. Looking at how he rose, he is going to attract more attention during the World Cup,” he said.

Carnell further suggested that MLS could serve as a valuable stepping stone rather than a final destination. According to him, the league offers strong competition, regular game time, and global exposure.

“Playing in America now could be the perfect prep for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He’ll get more exposure, experience, and might just level up big time. He is destined for Europe, so the MLS may just be a stepping stone for him,” Carnell added.

Mbokazi remains part of Broos’ broader plans for Bafana Bafana as South Africa continues preparations for upcoming international competitions.
