EFF Declares Victory on Data Expiry

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has announced victory in its fight against the expiry of prepaid data and airtime. The party said consumers will now be protected from losing unused data they already paid for.

According to the EFF, the campaign carried out through Parliament and direct engagement with regulators and mobile networks. Pressure was applied in the Portfolio Committees on Communications and on Trade and Industry. As a result, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) agreed to change its approach.

ICASA Concedes to EFF Demands

The EFF argued that data expiry rules violate the constitutional right to access information. It said forced expiry allows companies to profit unfairly from unused services. Therefore, the party demanded that unused data and airtime must be rolled over instead of expiring.

ICASA has now accepted this argument, according to the EFF. New regulations will require mobile networks to extend the validity of unused data and airtime. Furthermore, networks will be required to treat data as a paid product rather than a temporary benefit.

The party described the decision as a step toward digital justice. It said the change will benefit millions of prepaid users across the country.

Impact on Consumers

Many South Africans rely on prepaid mobile services. Most buy small bundles when they can afford them. Moreover, learners and job seekers depend on mobile data for schoolwork and job applications.

The EFF said the new rules will protect poor and working-class communities. In addition, it said the move will improve fairness in the digital economy. Consumer groups have also welcomed the announcement and praised the regulatory shift.

However, the EFF said the struggle is not over. High data prices remain a serious concern. Therefore, the party will intensify its campaign against what it calls excessive pricing by mobile networks.

Finally, the EFF said this victory proves that political pressure can bring change. The party added that data must be treated as a basic right in a digital society. It vowed to continue its campaign until affordable and accessible connectivity is secured for all South Africans.
