Court Case in Limpopo
A South African pig farmer and a co-accused appeared in the Polokwane High Court on charges of murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors accuse them of killing two women and dumping their bodies in a pig enclosure on a farm in Limpopo.
Police identified the victims as Maria Makgato and Lucia Ndlovu. Investigators said the women went to the farm in August 2024 to look for expired food. Ndlovu’s husband went with them. However, he survived the attack and later reported the incident to the police.
Allegations by the State
According to the state, the accused confronted the group on the farm. An argument followed. Shots were then fired at close range. The two women died at the scene. Their bodies were later placed inside a pigsty.
The surviving man escaped and ran for help. As a result, police opened a murder case. Officers later searched the farm and found remains inside the pig enclosure. Forensic experts confirmed the remains belonged to the missing women.
Meanwhile, a former co-accused turned state witness. He told the court that the farmer ordered him to move the bodies to the pigsty. He said he feared for his life and followed instructions. His testimony shocked many people in the courtroom.
In addition, prosecutors said the attack was planned. They believe the accused acted together. Therefore, they face two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
The case has caused anger across the country. Community members held protests near the court. Political parties also condemned the alleged killings. They called for harsh punishment if the court finds the accused guilty.
However, defence lawyers rejected the state’s claims. They said the witness gave conflicting statements. They also argued that the evidence does not prove planning. The accused pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The trial continues in Polokwane. More witnesses will testify in the coming days. The court will examine medical reports and crime scene photos. Finally, the judge will decide the fate of the accused.
If convicted, they could face life imprisonment.
